After highly acclaimed releases from OK EG and Donald’s House, Wax’o Paradiso Recordings proudly welcomes Naarm/Melbourne producer Midnight Tenderness (Ryan Hunter) to the fold. Over four tracks the ‘Hydrosphere EP’ continues the label’s narrative of platforming contemporary antipodean psychedelia with three masterful productions and a remix from Boorloo/Perth’s Hame DJ.As a producer with influences rooted in dub, street soul, boogie and the DNA of UK club music, Ryan draws down on the Middy T sound with the title track ‘Hydrosphere’, a blend of broken machine funk, glistening synth lines and beautiful crisp drum programming. ‘Rain Vibe’ takes the sound palette further adding a hefty wub for good measure. ‘Catamaran’ transports us back to the golden era on the Balearic isles, with the original evoking Ibizan sunset cruises whilst Hame DJ’s remix brings some Madchester chug to the mix.
A beautifully produced collection of instrumental tracks by The Disciples' Russ Bell-Brown featuring 8 excursions in chill out, atmospheric downtempo and dubby breakbeat. Surely we wouldn't be surprised to hear some of these at a Cafe del Mar sunset session in Ibiza. The way these tracks build up over a gradient (sometimes up to 11 minutes long) from silence to mellowed out spacial trance was clearly not done with industry standards of any sort in mind, allowing the listener to dive deep into the takes of this uncompromising producer. The title Experiments couldn't be more appropriate. In his own words: “This is a collection of tracks recorded in the mid 90`s... not reggae but what i call my `experiments`... downtempo, electronic, ambient, ethnic, jazzy, funky, dubby.... whatever came into my mind.” Surgically re-mastered for vinyl by manmade mastering in Berlin.
When not overseeing A&R and label operations for Isle Of Jura, label boss Kevin Griffiths makes time for music creation in his garden studio in Moana, a sleepy suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. It’s an idyllic location surrounded by palm trees and tropical birdlife and an inspiring spot to fire up the machines, typically with the studio door wide open to soak up the soundtrack provided by mother nature. The resulting tracks, recorded in the midst of the pandemic with no gig distractions, were all heavily influenced by this backdrop of tropical birdsong and wind blowing through the palms, field recordings of which made it into most of the tracks. The album traverses Deep House, Nu-disco, Balearica and Ambient along with some Leftfield samples and a heavy dose Dub throughout.
Wax’o Paradiso Recordings continues its dive into the extraordinary canon of contemporary Antipodean psychedelia with its second outing on vinyl, four spacious and soaring balearic cuts from local duo Donald’s House. From the glistening textures of 37° South (featuring renowned Australian percussionist Phil Stroud), to meandering meditative freakouts Aurora Australis and Under the Lilypad, to the italo new beat muscularity of ‘Budge-E Beat’, Donald’s House are showcasing a constantly evolving versatility and a truly unique take on the acid trip sunrise at the metaphorical Café del Murray.
Wonderland is a blissful sonic universe created between Nathan Melja & Flørist. The record launches Nathan Melja's new label called Parodia, a platform for creative output of his own as well as likeminded artists.
Reissue number three for Heels & Souls Recordings combines the Balearic bliss of Paprika Soul’s, ‘Come With Me’, with Soft Sugar’s dream house gem ‘Métro’ and an unreleased version of the tripped-out groover ‘Swampin'. A cherry picking of the best of three rare and sought after ‘90s EPs from the minds of High Wycombe’s Alan Barnes, Andrew Spiller and Andrew Hughes. As anthemic as they get, Paprika Soul's 'Come With Me (Sea Breeze)' is an otherworldly electronic interpretation of Tania Maria’s beloved Brazilian jazz funk classic from '83. Vocalist Sarah Newell's unique delivery combines with a euphoric blend of Barnes’ and Spiller’s crisp drum machine programming and cosmic synthwork. Complete with crashing waves and Balearic birds, it’s a timeless, endorphin-tingling track that feels even more relevant than ever. The A-side also features the brilliant street soul flavoured ‘The Chill’ mix and the ‘Bossa Mix’, the most true in form to the original.
Uni Son is the new ‘nom de plume’ of Jonathan Pardon aka Just Nathan, a long-time friend of the label and connoisseur of all things classy. So for the third artist album on We Play House Recordings we present you ‘Moments In Unity’.Inspired by those 4AM dance floor moments where all are one and the whole history of club music ‘Moments In Unity’ is a stunning debut on all accounts. Uni Son has his very own sound that takes in original deep house, Balearic, acid, ambient and a lot more and delivers an instant classic from start to finish that will appeal to a wide variety of ears and tastes. Time to unite, both on and off the dance floor.
The 21 track selection curated by Trujillo, a Venezuelan producer, DJ and record collector based in Berlin, explores the forgotten corners of the 1980s and early 90s Spanish music scene. Veering through early bleep and hip house, electro, boogie, Iberian pop and much more, it has broad appeal to both Balearic heads and diggers alike. Serendipitously, the cover art for the compilation is an original work by Yves Uro, a figurehead of Ibiza’s party scene from the 70s and 80s and whose visionary poster artwork became representative of the white isle. While some of the artists or producers on the compilation went on to have notable careers, many of the tracks selected here represent “one-offs” for the artists, and on occasion the labels as well. These sometimes self-released, privately-pressed productions, on short-lived imprints with names like Cantos and Prismatic, document the nascent clubland communities - from the capital, to major cities to the north, and east, and also smaller locales, coastal towns such as Marbella, Gijón, and Cádiz.Ritmo Fantasía is the result of over a decade’s worth of record collecting by DJ Trujillo, searching out bespoke stores, markets, and dealers. For the first time ever, it brings to light and groups together some hidden gems from an era that without it, would likely remain hidden from view.
